"Romeo Et Juliette"

Metropolitan Opera House, Lincoln Center

Romeo and Juliette are undeniably the most famous couple in all of western literature and quite possibly the world. Bartlett Sher's production of Gounod's sumptuous Shakespeare adaptation was the hit of the 2016-17 Met season and this sweeping tragedy returns again this season with Plácido Domingo conducting. First performed at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris in 1867, Romeo Et Juliette maintains most of the events of Shakespeare's masterwork, but the foundation of its structure is a whopping four love duets between the two leads. In this retelling of Shakespeare's story, two families in Verona, the Capulets and the Montagues, are bitter enemies. Conflict ensues when Romeo, a Montague, and Juliet, a Capulet, fall in love. In hands of the famous bard, the two star-crossed teens fighting for their love in the midst of a family feud is one filled with tremendous emotional weight and political intrigue. Before the performance we'll have dinner in New York at Brazil, Brazil Restaurant.
